Santo Amaro Chapel

4.6 ·

Seek out Santo Amaro Chapel, a small tiled gem tucked up a flight of terraced steps. Admire its green, yellow and blue azulejos, wrought-iron gates and the carved details on its wooden doors.

📖

Full description

Santo Amaro Chapel is a small church approached by triangular stepped terraces and a staircase, with an architecture that reviewers describe as quaint and human in scale, with a touch of Romanesque character. Inside, the tiling stands out for its blue, yellow and green tones rather than the more familiar all-blue azulejos, alongside elaborate iron gates, wooden doors and an old vaulted ceiling.

Carved limbs on the doors are a detail visitors enjoy spotting. It is free to enter, takes about 15 minutes, and is closed on Mondays, with conservation work reported to be beginning.

Reviews

I loved the triangular stepped terraces and the stair that led to this chapel. The architecture is very quaint, Romanesque in certain manner, but the scale is very human friendly and lacked the imposing European grandeur
