Moorish Quarter

Lose yourself in the Moorish Quarter, where Lisbon's medieval lanes still twist uphill toward the castle. Climb tiled stairways, peek into tiny squares, and pause at a viewpoint for rooftop views across the old town.

📖

Full description

The Moorish Quarter, centred on Mouraria and the slopes below São Jorge Castle, is one of Lisbon's most atmospheric old districts. Its tight, winding alleys, steep stairways, and small squares follow a medieval street pattern that survived the 1755 earthquake better than the lower city.

Laundry hangs from windows, tiled facades catch the light, and tiny taverns sit behind unmarked doors. The mood is lived-in and quietly photogenic, with a multicultural character that reflects its long history as a neighbourhood of newcomers.

It rewards slow, aimless walking more than a fixed itinerary.

Good to know

  • Walk it uphill toward the castle for the best views over the rooftops
  • wear shoes with good grip, as the cobbles and steps are steep and uneven
  • visit in the morning or late afternoon for softer light.
