Igreja de São Roque

4.6 ·

Walk into Igreja de São Roque, an early Jesuit church with a plain facade and a lavish interior. Spend half an hour moving from chapel to chapel, admiring the baroque decoration along the single nave.

📖

Full description

Igreja de São Roque was completed in 1582 and designed by Filipe Terzi and Afonso Álvares as one of the first Jesuit churches built specifically for preaching, with a single wide nave. Its side chapels are mainly baroque and richly ornamented, which is where reviewers find the craftsmanship most striking.

Some visitors find the interior a little dark, and the plain exterior gives little away. Entry is free and a visit takes around 30 minutes, suiting a short stop while exploring the Bairro Alto and Chiado area.
