Bairro Alto

Head up to Bairro Alto as evening falls, when Lisbon's most famous party quarter wakes up. Start with dinner or a fado set, then drift between tiny bars and the lively street crowd well into the night.

📖

Full description

Bairro Alto is a hilltop district of straight, narrow streets laid out in the 16th century, quiet and residential by day and transformed after sunset into Lisbon's main drinking area. Hundreds of tiny bars spill their crowds onto the pavements, with drinks often carried out into the street.

Alongside the bar scene are restaurants and traditional fado houses, giving the evening a choice of pace. The atmosphere is informal, loud, and sociable, with a mixed local and visitor crowd.

Earlier in the evening it is calmer and easier to browse venues before the late rush.
