Church of Saint Dominic

4.6 ·

Step inside Church of Saint Dominic, where the scars of a fire have been kept on show. Spend 20 minutes walking among blackened pillars and a soft orange barrel ceiling in one of Lisbon's most atmospheric churches.

📖

Full description

Church of Saint Dominic dates back to 1241 and was rebuilt after earthquakes and a major fire in 1959. Rather than erasing the damage, the restoration left the blackened, cracked pillars and walls exposed beneath a burnt orange and pink barrel ceiling.

Reviewers describe an unusually simple interior with a strong, almost moving atmosphere, unlike the gilded churches found elsewhere in the city. Entry is free and a visit takes about 20 minutes, making it an easy stop in the central Baixa and Rossio area.

Reviews

One of the most unique churches I have seen. It is kept to its original charm. The inside is not ornate but very simple. The color and the damaged pillars themselves tell the story of the church. I have never seen a church in the color red, and this will definitely be etched into my memory. This is a must-visit.
