Discover Pertevniyal Valide Sultan Mosque, a 19th-century Ottoman building with unmistakable European touches. Study its eclectic exterior, then step inside to admire the colourful dome overhead.

📖

Full description

Pertevniyal Valide Sultan Mosque was built in 1871 for the mother of Sultan Abdulaziz and was designed by an Italian architect, mixing a variety of styles. Reviewers note its European influence, which makes it look different from many other mosques in Istanbul, and praise the dome and the colours inside.

It is often overlooked given the prominence of larger mosques nearby, which means a quieter visit. There is space for prayer and a wudu area outside, and a typical stop takes around 15 minutes.

It suits visitors interested in 19th-century Ottoman architecture.
