Santa Maria Novella

Step onto Piazza Santa Maria Novella, where a green-and-white marble facade rises beside Florence's main station. Circle the square, peek into the historic perfumery nearby, and continue through the surrounding streets.

📖

Full description

The Santa Maria Novella area surrounds the Dominican basilica of the same name, whose green-and-white marble facade, completed in the Renaissance by Leon Battista Alberti, faces a spacious piazza near the main railway station. Nearby streets hold the historic Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica and a mix of hotels, shops, and restaurants.

It is a convenient and architecturally rich area to explore on foot, easily covered in around 75 minutes, and works well as a first or last stop given its closeness to the station.
