Walk beneath Brunelleschi's portico into Museo degli Innocenti, Florence's former foundling hospital. Browse historical artworks upstairs, catch the rotating exhibition on the first floor, and finish with a coffee at the museum cafe.

📖

Full description

Museo degli Innocenti occupies the part of the Innocenti complex that visitors can walk through, entered beneath Brunelleschi's celebrated portico. The building began as an orphanage in the fifteenth century and now holds historical works by well-known artists alongside a cafe.

The first floor hosts a revolving exhibition programme, with recent visitors mentioning shows on the history of screen printing and a Toulouse-Lautrec exhibition praised for its design, flow and crowd management. Reviewers call it underrated, and about an hour is enough to see the permanent collection and the current exhibition.

Reviews

We were there for the Toulouse-Lautrec exhibit and it was very well done in terms of set up, space design, flow, and crowd management. The collection was superb, we've been here for previous exhibits (like the Japanese fables/spirits) and have always enjoyed ourselves.
