Visit Basilica di Santo Spirito, Brunelleschi's understated church across the Arno. Walk the calm nave, find the Baroque altar, and seek out the early Michelangelo.

📖

Full description

Basilica di Santo Spirito is a church in the Oltrarno begun to Brunelleschi's design in 1444 and continued by others after his death in 1446. Its facade is deliberately plain, and the interest lies indoors, where a rhythmic nave leads to a lavish Baroque altar and numerous artworks.

Reviewers highlight an early work attributed to the young Michelangelo, and note photography is not allowed inside. Entry is free, the church is less crowded than the big central names, and a visit takes around half an hour.

The cloister is reachable separately.

Reviews

Wonderful church with a early work from young Michelangelo - a glimpse of his later genius. No photos inside, so only the cloister with its fountain below.
