Dugald Stewart Monument

4.7 ·

Climb to the Dugald Stewart Monument, a Greek-inspired hilltop tribute to a Scottish Enlightenment philosopher. Take the steep steps up and look out across Edinburgh's Old and New Towns.

📖

Full description

The Dugald Stewart Monument was built in 1831 to commemorate the Scottish philosopher and mathematician Dugald Stewart, a prominent figure of the later Scottish Enlightenment, and takes its form from the Tower of the Winds in Athens. It crowns a hillside reached by a short but steep climb of stairs, roughly ten minutes, after which reviewers describe a wide panorama over both the Old and New Towns.

It is free, open at all hours and especially favoured at sunset. Solo visitors and couples tend to enjoy it most.

Reviews

It is a maximum 10-minute walk up the hill with steep stairs. But the view afterward is magnificent. It is definitely worth it. You see a great panatomic view of the old and new towns of Edinburgh.
