Calton Hill rises just east of the city centre and is reachable on foot within roughly fifteen minutes, with a steeper final stretch near the summit. Its top is dotted with neoclassical monuments, and the open ground frames wide views over the skyline, Edinburgh Castle and beyond.

The climb suits families and older visitors who take the path rather than the steps, and a rooftop bar and restaurant with outdoor seating has recently been added nearby. A visit takes about 45 minutes, and the hill works equally for sunrise, afternoon light or an evening stroll.
