Black Tower

4.1 ·

Pause at the Black Tower, a medieval relic of Brussels' first city wall. Circle its dark stone from the street, picture the lost wall that once surrounded the city and photograph it against the modern buildings.

📖

Full description

The Black Tower is one of the last remains of the first city wall, which encircled Brussels for roughly four kilometres in the 13th century. Most of the wall was dismantled and its stone reused, so this stretch survives as a reminder of the medieval city.

It stands amid modern buildings and is lit at night, which reviewers say gives it a fairytale look in the evening. The tower is locked and cannot be entered, so the visit is an exterior look and a photo stop of about 20 minutes, easily combined with a walk through the centre.

Reviews

Our tour guide showed us this medieval tower in central Brussels. He explained how they moved all the other parts and used them to build the city however this part remained preserved to show the historical side of the city. He also mentioned that it's currently used as a storage unit by the government.
