St. Matthäus-Kirche was built in the 1840s in a round-arched style and now sits somewhat unexpectedly amid the modernist buildings of the Kulturforum, near the Philharmonie and Gemäldegalerie, having survived wartime damage that flattened much of the surrounding area.

Unusually for a working church, it regularly hosts contemporary art exhibitions inside its nave, blending worship space with gallery space in a way reviewers find distinctive, and a climb up its tower rewards visitors with views over the Kulturforum complex. It's free, quiet, and easily combined with the Kulturforum's museums, particularly for visitors already exploring that cluster of cultural institutions.
