The original Church of Reconciliation stood directly in the Wall's death strip after 1961, and East German authorities dynamited it in 1985 because its presence there was considered a security risk; the current Chapel of Reconciliation, completed in 2000 with distinctive rammed-earth walls, was built on the same foundations as an act of remembrance and healing. Its understated, contemplative design and daily midday prayer for peace and reconciliation give it a quieter register than the adjacent Berlin Wall Memorial, which surrounds it.
