Berlin Wall Memorial

4.6 ·

Walk the last complete stretch of the Berlin Wall along Bernauer Strasse. See the original death strip, a watchtower, and escape tunnel remnants, then follow photographs and audio testimonies through the documentation center telling the stories of divided families.

✨

Reasons to go

  • This is the only site preserving the wall's complete original apparatus — border wall, death strip, and watchtower together — rather than an isolated fragment.
  • It includes a preserved section of the underground escape tunnels dug beneath Bernauer Strasse.
  • The memorial marks a street where a single road was suddenly split by the wall, dividing families overnight.
📖

Full description

The Berlin Wall Memorial (Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer) runs for over a kilometer along Bernauer Strasse, the only place where visitors can still see the wall's full apparatus — the border wall, the death strip, a watchtower, and a preserved section of the underground escape tunnels — rather than a single isolated fragment. An open-air visitor center and documentation center use photographs, audio testimonies, and site markers to reconstruct the human cost of the division, including families separated by streets cut in half overnight.

With a 4.6 rating across nearly 47,000 reviews, it's consistently ranked among Berlin's most moving sites, drawing visitors far beyond typical Cold War tourism. Plan for at least an hour to walk the full outdoor site, more if you go through the documentation center.

Reviews

I ended up here instead of The Wall Museum. But i am glad i did. The memorial has a special place in the history and reading through the scriptures did enlighten me a lot. Again very close to the train station and rich in historical artefacts. Tip: Be aware of the train timings if you are staying on the east side or…
