Airlift Memorial

4.4 ·

Discover the Airlift Memorial, Berlin's "hunger rake" standing across from Tempelhof Airport. See its three concrete prongs representing the air corridors, and read the names of pilots and crew who died keeping West Berlin supplied.

✨

Reasons to go

  • The three curved concrete prongs, erected in 1951, symbolize the three air corridors flown into Berlin during the 1948-49 airlift.
  • The monument's base is inscribed with the names of pilots and crew who died during the round-the-clock supply missions.
  • It stands directly across from Tempelhof Airport's historic terminal, the site the airlift flights actually served.
📖

Full description

Erected in 1951 directly across from Tempelhof Airport, the Luftbrückendenkmal's three curved concrete prongs represent the air corridors used during the Berlin Airlift, when Allied planes flew round-the-clock supply missions to sustain West Berlin through a Soviet blockade in 1948 and 1949. Its base lists the names of the pilots and crew who died during the operation, a detail reviewers say adds real weight to what might otherwise be an abstract piece of postwar sculpture.

Standing right across the street from Tempelhof's historic terminal, it naturally pairs with a tour of the airport itself, and several reviewers mention visiting it as an addendum to that longer experience. It's a brief, free stop that adds context to the airport's story rather than a standalone destination.

💡

Good to know

  • Combine it with a Tempelhof Airport tour, since it stands directly across the street and adds context to that visit
  • look for the inscribed names of airlift crew members who lost their lives during the operation
  • it only takes a few minutes, so treat it as a coda to a longer Tempelhof visit rather than a separate trip.

Reviews

The interesting monument, I participated in the tour of the nearby abandoned Tempelhof Airport (very recommended). This monument is part of my later tour of the surrounding area.
