Landmark

Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar

4.7 (40,370)Free

Santa Maria del Mar rose between 1329 and 1383, funded and built largely by the porters and stonemasons of Barcelona's medieval waterfront district, which gives it an unusually pure, unified Gothic design rarely seen in churches built over centuries. A fire during the Spanish Civil War stripped away later Baroque additions, leaving the soaring stone columns and vast rose window exposed in a way many visitors find more moving than more ornate cathedrals. With a 4.7 rating across over 40,000 reviews, it's one of Barcelona's most consistently praised religious sites, and free entry keeps it accessible without the queues of the Sagrada Família. It suits anyone drawn to architecture and history rather than pageantry, a quieter counterpoint to Gaudí's more famous works.

What people say

"This church was stunning and not crowded at all. You can go in for free during certain hours but I was there early and wanted to see the view from the top. Forgot how much I made was it was pretty inexpensive and worth it. The view from the top was wonderful. You could even see Sagrada Família. Highly recommend."
