Holy Church of Saint George of Lycabettus

4.7 ·

Climb to the Chapel of Saint George on Lycabettus Hill, the highest viewpoint in central Athens. Step onto the terrace beside the whitewashed church and look across the city to the Acropolis.

📖

Full description

Perched at the summit of Lycabettus Hill, this small white chapel is the reason most visitors make the climb, though the setting outweighs the building itself. The esplanade around it looks over the rooftops of Athens toward the Acropolis and out to the sea, and reviewers say the view feels endless.

Inside, the chapel is tiny but richly decorated. The terrace fills quickly around sunset, so it works for couples and solo travellers alike, whether you walk up or take the funicular.

Good to know

  • Go late afternoon but arrive well before sunset, as the terrace gets very crowded then
  • wear grippy shoes for the footpath up
  • the chapel interior is small, so expect to look in briefly.

Reviews

Didn’t visit the church in itself but the esplanade around it offers a great view of Athens, the Acropolis and the sunset. Gets VERY crowded around sunset time
