Pause at the Hellenic Parliament, where Syntagma Square's grandest facade meets one of Athens' best-loved rituals. Watch the Evzones in their traditional uniforms change guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

📖

Full description

Built in the 1800s as a royal palace and now home to the Greek parliament, this neoclassical building overlooks Syntagma Square and is open to view around the clock. Visitors rarely come for the architecture alone: the draw is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at its foot, guarded by the Presidential Guard, the Evzones.

Reviewers single out the changing of the guard as the highlight, with a short ceremony every hour and a longer Sunday-morning parade that draws a crowd well in advance. A quick, free stop that fits easily between central sights.

Good to know

  • Arrive close to the top of the hour for the short guard change
  • for the full Sunday ceremony starting at 11:00, claim a spot about an hour early
  • the square sits next to a metro station, so it is easy to add to a walk.

Reviews

Guard change on Sunday is nice but you have to be there an hour prior the event that starts at 11. We also saw hourly guard change. Also nice to see and not crowded at all.
