Syntagma Square

Stop at Syntagma Square, the civic heart of Athens, directly facing the Parliament building. Watch the uniformed guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and take in the neoclassical facade before moving on.

📖

Full description

Syntagma Square sits directly in front of the Old Royal Palace, now the Hellenic Parliament, and has long been the symbolic centre of Athens. It is where the city's main avenues and metro lines converge, so many visitors pass through it on the way to somewhere else.

The main draw is the ceremonial guard change by the Evzones in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, set against the neoclassical Parliament facade. The square is open at all hours and needs no ticket, making it an easy 15-minute stop that doubles as a navigational anchor for central Athens.
