Academy of Athens

4.8 ·

Pause at the Academy of Athens, one of the city's finest neoclassical facades. Study the marble columns crowned by Athena and Apollo and take in the sculpted detail, ideally in soft morning or evening light.

📖

Full description

The Academy of Athens is Greece's leading research institution for the sciences, humanities and fine arts, set in a 19th-century neoclassical building of Pentelic marble. Its entrance is flanked by two tall columns topped with statues of Athena and Apollo, which draw most of the attention from passers-by.

Visitors treat it as an exterior stop rather than an interior visit: the facade, sculpture and painted decoration reward a short look. Reviewers say it photographs well by day and under evening lighting, and that it sits conveniently on a walk through central Athens.

Reviews

Another beautiful piece of Greek fine art and architecture. Truly one of the most amazing neoclassical and marble landmarks in the world. I probably stood there for a solid 20min in awe, both exterior and interior. Definitely worth a stop.
