Numismatic Museum of Athens

4.6 ·

Step inside the Numismatic Museum, set in Heinrich Schliemann's neoclassical mansion. Follow Greek history through coins and medals from antiquity onward, in rooms that are worth seeing in their own right.

📖

Full description

The Numismatic Museum, founded in 1834, tells the history of Greece through its currencies, from ancient coins to modern medals. It is housed in the Iliou Melathron, the neoclassical mansion once lived in by Heinrich Schliemann, so the building is as much a draw as the collection.

Reviewers find the displays easy to follow and enjoy the Greek and Roman coins in particular. Plan about an hour; it closes mid-afternoon.

Reviews

A must visit museum hidden in one of the best neighborhood of Athens. The museum did a good job telling the history of Greece through its change of currencies. The house where the museum is in is an attraction itself and the story behind its owner and architecture is incredible.
