Skinny Bridge

4.5 ·

Pause at the Skinny Bridge, Amsterdam's slender wooden drawbridge over the Amstel. Watch boats and cyclists pass, then return after dark to see the illuminated bridge reflected in the water.

📖

Full description

Spanning the Amstel River at Kerkstraat, between the Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, the Magere Brug is a slim wooden drawbridge that carries pedestrians and cyclists and still opens for passing boats. It is one of the city's most photographed spots, popular for its look in the morning light, in the rain, and especially after dark when it is illuminated.

Reviewers return to it at different times of day and find it equally rewarding. It is free, open around the clock, and needs only a short stop on a canal-side stroll.

💡

Good to know

  • Come after dusk for the lit-up view and fewer cyclists crossing
  • stand on the riverbank rather than on the bridge to get photos
  • pair it with a walk along the Amstel since there is little else at the bridge itself.

Reviews

The Magere Brug is the beautiful historical “Skinny Bridge.” We absolutely love Amsterdam and how easy it is to walk around and explore the beautiful city. This was one of our many favorite areas to see during this lovely morning.
