Montelbaanstoren

4.5 ·

Admire the Montelbaanstoren, a 1516 defensive tower rising straight out of the Oudeschans canal. Look up at its brick base and decorative spire, then follow the water for the best photographs.

📖

Full description

Built in 1516 as part of Amsterdam's city walls to guard against attacks from the water, the Montelbaanstoren has a fortress-like brick base that contrasts with the decorative white upper section added in 1606. That later addition holds the clock and bells and gives the tower its distinctive silhouette.

It rises directly from the canal and is easy to see at any hour, free of charge. Reviewers praise it as one of the prettiest old towers in the city and a good photo spot.

A visit takes about fifteen minutes and fits neatly into a walk along the canals.
