Homomonument

4.3 ·

Pause at the Homomonument, the world's first official memorial to LGBTQ+ people persecuted for who they were. Walk among its three pink triangles and step down to the Keizersgracht, where one point touches the water.

📖

Full description

Designed by Karin Daan, the Homomonument consists of three pink triangles that together form a larger triangle, one of them reaching down to the water's edge. The shape recalls the badge homosexuals were forced to wear under Nazi rule, turning a symbol of persecution into one of remembrance.

It sits beside the Westerkerk on the Keizersgracht, open at all hours and free to visit. Reviewers call it a moving tribute and a calm place to pause; a short stop of around fifteen minutes is enough to take in the design and its meaning.
