Grachtengordel

Stroll the Grachtengordel, Amsterdam's UNESCO-listed ring of Golden Age canals. Follow Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht past gabled mansions and hump-backed bridges, pausing at a canalside café.

📖

Full description

The Grachtengordel is the semicircle of canals dug in the 17th century, Amsterdam's Golden Age, lined with tall gabled merchant houses, hidden courtyards, and humpbacked bridges. Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht each have their own character, with the grandest mansions found along the 'Golden Bend' stretch of Herengracht.

The area is best experienced on foot or by canal boat, with cafés, galleries, and the Anne Frank House dotted along the route. Early mornings offer the calmest, most photogenic light.
