Find the Begijnhof, a secluded courtyard tucked behind Amsterdam's busy streets. Wander the green lawn and the historic houses around it, keeping your voice low as you go.

📖

Full description

The Begijnhof is a courtyard surrounded by old houses, founded in the Middle Ages as a community for lay religious women. Entering through a small passage off the busy streets, visitors find a lawn and a ring of historic facades that feel far removed from the centre.

It remains a residential area, so reviewers stress the importance of keeping quiet and respecting residents. Entry is free, and the setting is often compared favourably to similar beguinages elsewhere in Europe.

Half an hour is enough to walk the courtyard and take photographs.

Good to know

  • Keep your voice down, as people live here and the entrance asks for respect
  • visit in the morning for fewer visitors
  • the entrance is a small passage, so look for the gate off the main street.

Reviews

Free entry, lovely courtyard. It’s a residential area, so please respect that and explore quietly! A few people didn’t while I was there which was a shame as they were definitely asked to be quiet on entry.
