Slip away from the centre to Sankt Marxer Friedhof, Vienna's atmospheric 18th-century cemetery. Wander its ivy-covered graves, find the memorial near Mozart's unmarked burial, and enjoy the stillness of one of the city's most peaceful corners.
Full description
Sankt Marxer Friedhof is a historic graveyard in Vienna's Landstraße district, the last of the city's old Biedermeier-era cemeteries still in this state. Many graves are weathered and overgrown with ivy, giving it a quiet, romantic character far from the central crowds.
Its best-known feature is the memorial marking the area where Mozart was buried in an unmarked grave in 1791, which reviewers say is easy to find. Visitors describe a tranquil place suited to unhurried wandering, though some graves are hard to locate and the uneven ground makes it less ideal with small children.
