Majolikahaus of Otto Wagner

4.5 ·

See Otto Wagner's Majolikahaus, a Secession apartment block wrapped in flowering ceramic tiles. Walk along the Linke Wienzeile to study the floral facade and compare it with the Kolo Moser house next door.

📖

Full description

The Majolikahaus is one of Otto Wagner's best-known Secession-era residential buildings in Mariahilf. Its facade is clad in glazed ceramic tiles with climbing flower motifs, a colourful contrast to the plain stucco typical of the street.

Visitors often mention how readily it impresses even those with no architectural background, and some note that the facade could use restoration. Right beside it stands the building by Kolo Moser, which rewards a direct comparison.

As an exterior viewing it is free and open at any hour, and 15 minutes is enough to take in the tilework and details.
