Scuola Grande di San Rocco

4.8 ·

Step inside the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Tintoretto's great canvas-covered brotherhood hall. Spend an hour tracing biblical scenes across ceilings and walls, with mirrors to help you look up in comfort.

📖

Full description

Founded in 1478 as a brotherhood dedicated to Saint Roch, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco is best known for the extensive cycle of paintings by Tintoretto that fills its upper and lower halls and ceilings. The main hall on the first floor is ornate and full of detail, and visitors often borrow mirrors to study the ceiling comfortably without craning their necks.

The paintings interweave Old and New Testament scenes, which makes context valuable. Allow around an hour to take in the rooms, and note that reviewers frequently recommend a guide to decode the imagery.

Reviews

Blown away. The murals in the front room are spectacular with different stories from the bible. With big standouts from Tintoretto. To walk up stairs and have the salone maggiore revealed is breathtaking. So glad to have stopped in.
