Parrocchia di Santa Maria Formosa

4.6 ·

Pause at Santa Maria Formosa, a church set on a spacious campo just off the busy tourist routes. Step inside to see the relics and the Polyptych of Saint Barbara, then linger in the square.

📖

Full description

Santa Maria Formosa stands on a wide, open square lined with shops and cafes, a short walk from the major sights yet noticeably calmer. Inside, reviewers point to the holy relics of Marina of Antioch and the Polyptych of Saint Barbara, though the ceiling is described as plainer than in other Venetian churches.

The square around it is as much a part of the visit as the building, with room to sit and watch local life. Entry is free, a visit takes about fifteen minutes, and the church is covered by the city's church pass.

Reviews

Very beautiful church with a nice wide piazza surrounding it; the main nave was roped off, but the kind lady in the kiosk let us cross it to go see the Polyptych of Saint Barbara on the other side. This church is worth a quick detour.
