Take the water bus to Murano, where Venetian glassmaking is still a living trade. Watch a glassblower at the furnace, browse canal-side showrooms, and wander the island's calm bridges and small squares.

📖

Full description

Murano is a cluster of small islands linked by bridges, a short boat ride from Venice, and the centre of Venetian glassmaking since the industry was relocated here centuries ago. Many workshops offer live demonstrations of glass being shaped at the furnace, and shops line the main canal selling everything from chandeliers to small souvenirs.

The Glass Museum documents the craft's long history, and the basilica of Santi Maria e Donato offers a quieter stop. The island has a calmer pace than Venice proper and is easy to explore on foot in a few hours.

Good to know

  • Watch a furnace demonstration before buying to understand the craft
  • confirm that glass is made on the island if authenticity matters
  • consider a day pass for water buses if combining Murano with other lagoon stops.

Reviews

We spent a day here and were quite disappointed with the ‘cloned’ stores. There are some high-end galleries (starting at $1500) but the regular shops are like ‘minions cloning’ style. The unfortunate part is that many items are from China and not actually from Italy. So, we are very selective about our purchases.
