Jewish Quarter

4.5 ·

Walk into the Jewish Quarter, the Venetian district where the word "ghetto" began. Cross its main campo, look up at the tall tenements and pass the synagogues, kosher shops and the Jewish Museum.

📖

Full description

The Jewish Quarter is the area where Venice confined its Jewish community from 1516, and it is the origin of the word "ghetto". It grew from Ghetto Nuovo into Ghetto Vecchio and Ghetto Nuovissimo as different communities were admitted on separate terms.

Today the main campo, tall tenements and two synagogues sit alongside kosher shops and the Jewish Museum of Venice. Reviewers call it a profound place to walk, and several suggest researching the history beforehand and exploring independently rather than relying on a tour.

About an hour covers the squares and surrounding lanes at an unhurried pace.

💡

Good to know

  • Read up on the ghetto's history before arriving so you can explore on your own
  • check opening days, since the area is quiet on Saturdays and the museum keeps its own schedule
  • expect to manage bridges and steps if you arrive with luggage.

Reviews

A quiet area in the greater urban Venice. Good food and a difference culture to appreciate as you wander the streets and waterways of this Ghetto in the larger area of Canarreggio. There are tours if you don't want to do your own research but the care as public toilets are few and far between. Not so much for children…
