Cannaregio

Cannaregio is the northernmost and one of the most populous of Venice's six sestieri, with a more lived-in feel than the districts around San Marco. Long canal-side fondamente, such as the Fondamenta della Misericordia, are lined with local bars and restaurants, while the Jewish Ghetto, one of the oldest in Europe, adds a distinct cultural layer.

The area is largely flat and easy to walk, and its lively evening scene centres on casual wine bars serving cicchetti. It suits visitors who want to see everyday Venetian life alongside canals and historic sites.
