Bridge of Sighs

See the Bridge of Sighs, Venice's most photographed prison passage beside the Doge's Palace. Take in its white stone and barred windows from the canal bridge and watch the gondolas glide beneath.

📖

Full description

The Bridge of Sighs is a covered limestone bridge with small barred windows that spans a canal beside the Doge's Palace near St Mark's. It carried prisoners between the palace's interrogation rooms and the prison, which gave rise to its name.

The best view is from the neighbouring bridge or from the water, where gondolas regularly pass beneath it. It is a quick stop rather than a long visit, usually combined with the palace and the St Mark's area, and it draws steady crowds throughout the day.

Reviews

A beautiful and historic bridge with a unique story behind it. The white stone design and small windows give it a distinctive charm. Best seen from the canal, especially with gondolas passing by. Romantic yet a bit melancholic. A must-see spot in Venice that adds to the city’s timeless atmosphere.
