Arsenale di Venezia

4.6 ·

Discover the Arsenale di Venezia, the shipyard that powered the Republic's fleet. Walk to the lion-flanked gateway, follow the canals and shipyard buildings, and see what exhibition currently fills the old halls.

📖

Full description

The Arsenale was the shipbuilding engine of the Venetian Republic, and its walled grounds in the eastern Castello district still hold canals, rope-making halls and old shipyard buildings. Today the site is used for cultural events, exhibitions and trade fairs, and it becomes a major venue whenever the Biennale is on.

Visitors describe an atmosphere far removed from the crowded areas around St Mark's, with the monumental entrance and stone lions drawing photographers. Plan around its short weekday hours, and note that it is free to approach the exterior but interior access depends on what is staged.
