Basílica de Jesús del Gran Poder

4.8 ·

Visit the Basílica de Jesús del Gran Poder to see the image Sevillanos know as the Lord of Seville. Take in the sculpture by Juan de Mesa and the devotional atmosphere around it.

📖

Full description

Completed in 1965, this basilica shelters the sculpture of Nuestro Padre Jesús del Gran Poder, carved by Juan de Mesa in 1620 and central to Seville's Holy Week devotion. The building itself is modern, which some reviewers find less striking than the image it protects, but its Renaissance- and baroque-style facade, belfry and 18th-century organ give it character.

The atmosphere is devotional and local, with worshippers coming and going throughout the day. During Holy Week the figure is moved onto its processional platform, changing what visitors see inside.

Reviews

One of the most venerated images in Seville, popularly known as the Lord of Seville. The sculpture is a work by Juan de Mesa from 1620. The building though is very modern, not very interesting. The arms of the image can be articulated so during easter they are separated to carry the cross while the rest are the year…
