Museo delle Mura

4.5 (680)$ · Budget-friendly

Set within one of the surviving gates of the Aurelian Walls, this museum documents the fortifications that once encircled ancient Rome and, uniquely, allows visitors to walk directly along a preserved stretch of the walls themselves for panoramic views over the city and countryside. It's frequently described by reviewers as an overlooked experience, offering a tangible, physical sense of ancient Roman engineering that photographs and displayed fragments elsewhere can't quite match. A 4.5 rating with high hidden-gem and local scores fits a museum valued by those who happen upon it, historically curious travelers, and locals rather than mainstream tour itineraries. Note that last entry is enforced a full hour before closing, so timing the visit matters.

What people say

"Unique view. Easy to think what it was like in the BC. It is truly a place for imagination and interpretation. Open, clean, calm. When we were there, it was relatively empty. In the first room there is a screen and history about the place. I love medieval history, so it was such a pleasure to walk around and imagine what was there. It also occurred to me how great it would be to hold events there! Also, it's right next to Appia Antica! I would definitely include it as a spot to visit on the way to it."
