Reasons to go

  • Built in the early 2nd century under Emperor Trajan as a multi-level complex of shops and offices overlooking the Imperial Fora
  • Visitors walk through the original brick vaults and passageways rather than viewing artifacts behind glass
  • Less crowded than the nearby Forum and Colosseum despite being an extensive, well-preserved multi-level site
📖

Full description

Built under Emperor Trajan in the early 2nd century, this multi-level complex of brick vaults and shop fronts is one of the best-preserved pieces of everyday ancient Roman architecture and now doubles as the Museum of the Imperial Fora. Rather than viewing objects behind glass, visitors walk directly through the original structure, following ramps and passageways that once served commercial and administrative space overlooking the fora below.

A 4.7 rating and perfect must-see and culture scores mark it as a top-tier Rome experience, with reviewers praising the immersive sense of stepping into Roman daily life rather than just admiring artifacts. Plan on a couple of hours given the site's scale and the views it offers over the excavated forum complex.
