Da Tonino - Trattoria Bassetti

4.5 (3,909)$$ · Mid-range

Tucked on Via del Governo Vecchio, Da Tonino has the feel of a genuine neighbourhood kitchen rather than a tourist stop, with a menu of Roman staples cooked the way reviewers repeatedly describe as tasting truly homemade. At 4.5 stars from nearly 3,900 reviews, it draws a strong local following alongside visitors, and its solid local score reflects that lived-in, family-run character. The outdoor seating is cosy but can feel a little tight when the street fills up. It's a good fit for a relaxed, unfussy lunch or dinner rather than a special-occasion splurge.

What people say

"Overall, a very enjoyable meal, with just a couple of things that stopped it from being perfect. The outdoor seating was a little cramped. At times, it felt like my dining companion and I had accidentally joined a large family gathering rather than booked a table for two. I now know more about the conversations at neighboring tables than I do about some of my relatives. The bread basket was an interesting start. It arrived containing what looked suspiciously like four pieces of leftover bread and one piece that had narrowly escaped being burnt. I politely asked the waiter to replace it and couldn't resist asking: "If I came to your table with this bread basket, what would you say?" His answer: " I don't know!". To their credit, they immediately brought a fresh one. For the mains, we ordered the Cacio e Pepe, Carbonara, and meatballs. The undisputed champion of the evening was the Carbonara, a solid 10/10 and one of the best I've had. The Cacio e Pepe was tasty but the pasta slightly overcooked, while the meatballs were absolutely delicious and full of flavor. Despite the bread basket's mysterious origins and the close-quarters dining experience, the food was excellent overall and the service handled our concerns well. With a little more space between tables and a bit more attention to the bread basket, this would easily be a five-star experience."
