Explore the Portuguese Centre of Photography, housed in an old prison in the heart of Porto. Wander its winding corridors, see rotating photography exhibitions and look at historic cameras, all without paying an entrance fee.

📖

Full description

The Portuguese Centre of Photography occupies a former prison in central Porto, and the building is as much of an attraction as the exhibitions. Its programme covers contemporary, documentary and historical photography, and reviewers mention a major show of Vivian Maier's work running until August 2026.

The corridors, cells and stairways of the old structure make for a maze-like visit, and the collection of cameras appeals to technically minded visitors. Entry is free, which makes it easy to fold into a city walk, and an hour is typically enough.

Reviews

Awesome experience if you’re really in to photography. We really enjoyed the exhibits, and the fact it’s all in an old prison made it really enjoyable. We did find it dragged on slightly after the first few rooms of cameras.
