Discover the Douro Estuary Nature Reserve, a quiet wetland a short way from Porto's centre. Follow the raised walkways to the hides and look for herons, egrets and kingfishers.
Full description
The Douro Estuary Nature Reserve protects an area of wetland close to the city centre where the river meets the Atlantic. Visitors come mainly for birdwatching, with reviewers reporting whimbrels, herons, egrets, kingfishers, flamingos and even an osprey.
Two elevated walkways lead to two hides, and the walk to them is short. Low tide is repeatedly recommended for the best sightings.
It is free, open around the clock and rated highly, making it an unusual quiet stop for solo travellers and bird enthusiasts.

Great! It’s free and it’s a great place to see birds. Go around low tide as others have said. We saw Whimbrels, Herons, and various other species. The walk to the two hides is very short. In addition you can walk to the nearby beach and the other way along the waterfront. Both are worthwhile, meaning you could easily…
