Head to Matosinhos Beach for a wide Atlantic shoreline just outside Porto. Swim, watch surfers, climb the rocks toward the old fort, and stay on for the sunset.
Full description
Matosinhos Beach is a broad stretch of sand north of Porto with good facilities, steady surf and a small town behind it. Reviewers highlight the surfing, the rocks to climb and the fort at the far end, which can be entered for a small fee.
Atlantic sunsets and the sound of the waves are a draw, though some note litter in places and strong heat on summer days. A typical visit runs around two and a half hours, enough for a walk, a swim or a surf session.

Huge sand beach with great facilities! Perfect location for surfing too. The far end of the beach has an old fort to wander around (and in for a small fee). Lots of rocks to climb on and hear the tide crash against. Popular with locals and tourists.
