Parc des Buttes-Chaumont

4.6 (27,348)Free

Spread across steep, landscaped terrain in the 19th arrondissement, this park centers on a lake overlooked by a suspended bridge and the Temple de la Sybille, perched on a rocky island. Paths wind past grottoes, cascades and grassy slopes, with entrances on Rue Botzaris, Rue Manin, Rue de Crimée and Avenue Simon-Bolivar. It is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, though some zones, including the island, temple and cascades, are currently closed due to unstable ground.

✨ Reasons to go

  • 1The park was built in the 1860s on former gypsum quarries and a gallows site, transformed under Haussmann's renovation of Paris.
  • 2The Temple de la Sybille, perched on a rocky island, is a small-scale reproduction of the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli.
  • 3A suspended footbridge crosses to the island, offering views over an artificial lake and man-made grottoes with a waterfall.

💡 Good to know

  • 1The park is hilly with cliffs and winding paths, so wear comfortable shoes
  • 2note that access to the island temple and waterfalls is currently closed due to ground instability.

What people say

"I’ve always loved the parks in Paris. They are always well-maintained and by far the prettiest parks of all European cities. But did I just stumble on mother?! It’s amazing!!!! I’m happy it wasn’t too crowded. A real hidden gem in the middle of Paris without all the tourists (myself included). Great to cool down on a hot day in the shade or to run apparently with all the breathtaking height differences the park offers. Absolutely stunning!"
