Escape the seafront crowds and head uphill to Cimiez, Nice's calm, villa-lined hill district. Explore the Roman ruins, wander through the monastery gardens and olive groves, and take in views over the city below.
Full description
Cimiez is a leafy, calm hillside quarter overlooking Nice, quite different in feel from the seafront below. Its core is the archaeological area of the ancient Roman town of Cemenelum, with the remains of baths and an amphitheatre, set beside the Franciscan monastery and its gardens.
The neighbourhood also holds the Matisse and Archaeology museums and a park of centuries-old olive trees. Grand Belle Époque villas and elegant residential streets give it a refined, unhurried atmosphere that suits couples and slow walkers.
It is a natural half-day escape from the busier centre.
