Discover the Südliche Fröttmaninger Heide, a protected heathland on Munich's northern fringe. Hike its open, flat paths and look for butterflies, orchids and other rare wildlife.
Full description
The Südliche Fröttmaninger Heide is a protected heathland on the northern edge of Munich, near Garching, known for habitats that shelter endangered butterflies, green toads and orchids. The terrain is flat and open, dotted with small clusters of trees, which makes for easy hiking with wide views.
Visitors describe it as a genuine escape just outside the city, with large numbers of blue butterflies in August. It is free and open at all hours, and around an hour is enough for a loop, with early morning and evening the most atmospheric.

Good nature reserve on the outskirts of Munich. Great escape from the city... Lots and lots of Common and Idas Blue butterflies here in August.
