Cross into Schwanthalerhöhe, the Westend quarter that begins at the Bavaria statue above the Theresienwiese. Wander its street-art-dotted blocks and multicultural eateries for a down-to-earth slice of Munich life.
Full description
Schwanthalerhöhe, often shortened to Westend, lies just west of the Theresienwiese where the Oktoberfest takes place. It is a dense residential quarter of late-19th-century apartment blocks, small shops, local restaurants and a strongly multicultural population.
Street art and small galleries give parts of the area a creative edge, and the Bavaria statue and Ruhmeshalle overlooking the Theresienwiese mark its eastern boundary. The district is not polished for tourists, which is part of its interest, and a walk here shows an everyday side of Munich close to the main station.
