The Old Town is the compact historic heart of Munich, centred on Marienplatz and its neo-Gothic New Town Hall with the Glockenspiel. Nearby stand the twin-towered Frauenkirche, dating from the 15th century, the Peterskirche and the Viktualienmarkt, a daily food market with stalls and a beer garden.

Pedestrian streets such as Kaufingerstraße link the main sights and the shopping areas. Most landmarks sit within a few hundred metres of each other, so the area is easy to cover on foot in a couple of hours, with plenty of places to stop for food.
