Meet the Neues Rathaus, the neo-Gothic centrepiece of Marienplatz. Study its carved facade, then watch the Glockenspiel figures spring into motion, or head up the tower for views over Munich's old town.

📖

Full description

The Neues Rathaus anchors Marienplatz with a sprawling Gothic Revival facade, built between 1867 and 1908 and covered in carved stone detail. Its tower rises above the square and offers views over the old town, while the Glockenspiel, a mechanical clock with moving figures that act out scenes from Munich's past, draws crowds when it chimes.

Reviewers single out the sheer scale and intricacy of the stonework, and note that arriving shortly before the chime gives the best experience. It's a short, low-effort stop in the middle of the pedestrian centre.

Reviews

This is absolutely the most beautiful, detailed, and majestic building I have ever seen. In my personal opinion, it surpasses the cathedral in Milan. I definitely recommend visiting to appreciate its scale and level of detail.
