Head out to Pirelli Hangar Bicocca, a former factory turned contemporary art space. Walk among Anselm Kiefer's monumental towers and explore the temporary installations, all free to enter.
Full description
Pirelli Hangar Bicocca is a contemporary art museum in a former industrial complex, built around monumental permanent installations and temporary shows. The best-known piece is Anselm Kiefer's The Seven Heavenly Palaces, whose towers visitors can walk up to and enter.
Admission is free, which reviewers highlight, and temporary exhibitions vary widely in tone, with some containing mature content unsuitable for children. Its location outside the historic centre means a longer trip, but the vast spaces reward it.
Plan around 75 minutes.

Reviews
An ongoing free exhibition by Anselm Kiefer. You can walk up to the towers and go inside them. We also saw a temporary exhibition featuring a maze and various installations; we really liked it, and it's interesting for children too, though of course, they won't grasp the deeper meaning beyond board games and the maze…
